History & Growth

* In 1948, the year after India's independence from British rule, in the then Salem district, which included the present-day districts of Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Erode, This "Salem Jilla Lorry Owners Association" was established for the benefit and welfare of the lorry owners of the District and for the people who were involved in the transport industry to get their rights.

* The Association was started and began to function with the Late Mr. C.K.Nallappa Mudaliyar as the President, Late Mr. S.Govindarajalu Naidu as the Secretary and Late Mr. G.Ramachandra Naidu as Treasurer of the Association. The Association was growing steadily and providing many services and benefits to the lorry owners even though its economy was weak.

* In 1963 and 1964, Burmah Shell ("Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd") Diesel & Petrol Outlet was started at Shevapet and Caltex ("Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd") Diesel & Petrol Outlet was started at Nethimedu and acquired the retail rights. After one year of business, the Association rented out the two diesel outlets to private individuals and earned income.

* Then in 1978, it was decided to recover and run the two diesel outlets by the Association itself. The Association started doing business after recovering both the outlets. Due to the cooperation of the members and the patronage of the owners, the Association began to boom economically.

* In 1982, land was purchased at Nethimedu for HPC Diesel & Petrol outlet. In 1982 due to many protests by the Lorry Owner's Association, 4.19 acres of land, at Gunnduchetty Lake Ground, Shevapet, Salem was earmarked for setting up the lorry stand. Accepting our request on 11-10- 1989 Hon. Minister Veerapandi S.Arumugam laid the foundation stone for the lorry stand. The work started and the truck station came into use.

* On 25-06-1987, our Association convened all truck owners Associations in Tamil Nadu at National Hotel, Salem and formed the "State Lorry Owners’ Federation – Tamil Nadu" under the leadership of Namakkal President Late Thiru. P.Sengodan and which is functioning well even today.

* On 14-12-1994, a land of about 30000 sq.ft was purchased at Kandampatty By-Pass Road and on 27-06-1997 "BPC Diesel & Petrol Outlet" was inaugurated with modern facilities at a cost of around one crore rupees. Diesel and petrol are being sold in large quantities in this outlet.
